3.73 - STARTING A GARDEN + NURSERY – WATERING; KALE + SPINAT

PERMACULTURE COURSE AGRO-ECONOMY (Post 43. Oct. 2024) 1 PDC LESSON - 3.73 - STARTING A GARDEN + NURSERY – WATERING; KALE + SPINAT  Near NIGHTINGALE MEDICAL CENTRE in KISUMU MILIMANI KENYA Lilian waters diligently in the evenings during the dry period in October and September here. I'm glad that she helps me, she always buys the good seedbed soil and her seedbeds are in the shade because she has tall trees. That makes 3-5 degrees and there's always a bit of wind between the trees. I then repot using potting soil in my nursery. I bought 30 m of hoses and that makes watering a lot easier. For the left garden I need another 30 meters, provided the pressure is sufficient. Kisha mimi hupaka ...

It is a great medicinal plant with unrivalled antitoxic properties, works against diabetes, Alzheimer's and malaria, and also against impure skin. I came across it by chance and googled it. July 2024) 1 PDC LESSON - 3.70 - STARTING A GARDEN + NURSERY – ALL GROWS –TIME FOR BREAD Near NIGHTINGALE MEDICAL CENTRE in KISUMU MILIMANI KENYA Yes, everything is growing well, it rains again in the evenings and that is what we need here, but the weeds are also growing and that is a lot of work. Our trees have all grown well, I have to count them, pawpaw, maple, moringa, and the typical Kenyan trees, castor oil tree, castor and also amaranth grows 3 m high if the soil is good. Time to bake bread, if you have a small oven, yes that is part of being a farmer, making cheese from whole milk, baking bread, making beer (from ginger), and slaughtering and making sausages yourself.  PERMACULTURE COURSE AGRO-ECONOMY (Post 39.  2024) 1 PDC LESSON - 3.69 - STARTING A GARDEN + NURSERY – MULCH AND MARYGOLD Near NIGHTINGALE MEDICAL CENTRE in KISUMU MILIMANI KENYA I can only say from experience that mulching is an absolute must, especially in hot regions like here in Kisumu, where it is constantly 26 to 32 degrees at midday. Even if it rains heavily in the evening, the surface is dry the next day due to the intense sunlight. Mulching prevents this and the moisture stays in the soil up to the top layer. Vegetables in particular do not have deep roots and are dependent on the moisture in the top layers. The soil organisms can only really develop under mulch and constantly moist soil. Mulching is an absolute must for organic gardening. PERMACULTURE COURSE AGRO-ECONOMY (Post 38. 2024) 1 PDC LESSON - 3.68 - STARTING A GARDEN + NURSERY – SALAD - KALES Near NIGHTINGALE MEDICAL CENTRE in KISUMU MILIMANI KENYA The lettuce was a success and we had it to eat every day. But if it is left in the heat for too long, it shoots and produces flowers and then seeds. 30 degrees every day here in Kisumu is too hot. There is not much lettuce here in the market, apparently because of the heat. But mixed salad with onions, tomatoes and yoghurt dressing is healthy. The heat does not harm the kale, it grows well and feels comfortable among the marigold, which keeps the vermin away. Bild
PERMACULTURE COURSE AGRO-ECONOMY (Post 36.  Mai 2024) 1 PDC LESSON - 3.66 - STARTING A GARDEN + NURSERY – MUCH WORK Near NIGHTINGALE MEDICAL CENTRE in KISUMU MILIMANI KENYA We are starting with the gardening and growing seeds. We are starting to grow European system seeds in a water footbath. If the water comes from below, the roots grow towards the water, which means they form faster and get bigger. If you always water from above, the fine new roots turn upwards because it is drier at the bottom of the pot. We have not yet found the right bowls or had them made. At the moment we are using cheap plastic plates. Crockery, so to speak, but it slowly dissolves under strong UV radiation. The plastic cups do not last long in the strong sun either. In the long term, we will go back to the traditional plastic milk bags. But these take up more space and are better suited for the first repotting. Everything is in process and we are trying to find the most profitable option. Even using...

PERMACULTURE COURSE AGRO-ECONOMY (Post 34.  April 2024) 1 PDC LESSON - 3.64 - STARTING A GARDEN + NURSERY – LAYER OF LEAVE MULCH Near NIGHTINGALE MEDICAL CENTRE in KISUMU MILIMANI KENYA The best you can find is older rotten leaves under trees with small leaves, which change them every year. Take as much you find into your garden and cover your crop bed with this. With the next heavy rain, the nutarians will be washed down and going into the soil very easy and quick, its real finish compost. Cover until 5 to 7 inches always.  Weed will be stopped also with this cover.  With the lawn you get you can make new compost, which needs 8 months to be rotten as compost to earth. So produce soil for the next year.. this saves you money.  Best is a mixed layer with animal dung also.  PERMACULTURE COURSE AGRO-ECONOMY (Chapisho 34. In heavy rain, the topsoil does not wash away, and the excess water flows down the paths, or remains there and seeps away later. Super big, a stable plant, we have it in red and white. I harvested a lot of seeds to grow it systematically when the rainy season comes. The grains are fine and are good for baking in bread.   PERMACULTURE COURSE AGRO-ECONOMY (Post 31.  Mar. 2024) 1 PDC LESSON - 3.61 - STARTING A GARDEN + NURSERY – SOIL – SOIL - SOIL Near NIGHTINGALE MEDICAL CENTRE in KISUMU MILIMANI KENYA If you start a garden on the side of the road, on this hard, bad soil, then you have to try to buy soil, sift it and also pile up the existing turf as compost, and bring in more greenery, collect leaves from the avenue trees, and find cut grass and mix everything. It costs and takes a year for it to rot, but it is the only way to build a garden. But that is it, turning bad soil into a garden using the risen bed technique, that is permaculture. Growing peppers from seeds on the balcony and growing them into plants is the cheapest way to set up a garden and start with little cost and a lot of time. But if you sow every day and then rework and replant 10 m² every day, you will have some kind of yield in your garden for 5 to 6 months. With 250 working days a year, that's 2500 m², more than an acre. ...

The dilemma was that I had brought a whole suitcase of seeds back from Spain. None of them sprouted, I had tried everything. They were GMO-manipulated by the nursery, which means they only bloom once and you have to keep buying them again. We got a whole box of seeds from this one wild, unmanipulated flower and all the seeds sprouted. The whole garden is full of them now...and we can also sell the plants. Unfortunately, I don't know the name of the "tropical tree". It is typical for Kenya and you see it everywhere outside the city in the fields. It grows very quickly, 3 m in a year, which is enormous, and provides good shade. We have a few in the garden. PERMACULTURE COURSE ...

April 2024) 1 PDC LESSON - 3.58 - STARTING A GARDEN + NURSERY – KALE & MARIGOLD Near NIGHTINGALE MEDICAL CENTRE in KISUMU MILIMANI KENYA We planted a lot of marigolds (Tagetes) between the kale plants. This is not only pretty, but also very important in organic gardening. Marigold is a natural killer of the white butterflies that go to the cabbage. You can eat the flowers and also use them as a base for soap. Marigold as a plant is very easy to grow in the warm Kenyan climate. Simply put the seeds in good potting soil and keep them moist, then transplant the plants into small pots and grow roots and then transplant them into the garden when they are 25 cm tall. The better the soil and water, the bigger the bush and the more flowers. When they dry out, you can get new seeds. The greenery is then left on the bed as mulch. It acts like an antitoxin in the soil. PERMACULTURE KOZI KILIMO-UCHUMI (Post 28. 2024) SOMO 1 la PDC - 3.58 - KUANZ...

PERMACULTURE COURSE AGRO-ECONOMY (Post 27.  Jan 2024) 1 PDC LESSON - 3.57 - STARTING A GARDEN + NURSERY – GREEK COTTON Near NIGHTINGALE MEDICAL CENTRE in KISUMU MILIMANI KENYA I got 10 cotton seeds from a friend in Italy. OK so far, and I planted them in pots and then transplanted them in the left part of the garden, where the soil is not quite as good. 6 trees have sprouted and it is hard to believe how much they have grown. It is unbelievable how many seeds I got. Each bush has flowered and produced between 30 and 40 clusters. And each had 8 seeds in a flower or cluster. Apart from the fact that I use the cotton for sofa cushions, I have now collected 1250 seeds. The second generation, which has now been sown and planted, has also been successful. Plucking the seeds is tedious, but calming, because you can listen to music while you do it. (But now I also know why the Europeans needed Africans to help with their cotton fields before they developed machines for this work.) The hot ...

Pumpkins need special treatment; it is best if they can climb upwards and you have appropriate racks. After 2 or 3 fruits you should cut off the tendrils, otherwise they will grow too much into the leaves and not produce any fruit. The fruit fly also causes a big problem, especially in very humid, wet climates. We bought special traps for this that are equipped with a kind of biscuit that attracts the flies by smell and then kills them when they fly into the box. This is a biological process.  It's amazing when you see after a week how many fruit flies end up in the box. It's shadier there than on our side, which suits the small plants very well. We now have parsley, peppers and Pawpaw that we grow. Since it rains here almost every evening, this is wonderful and easy to work with. Only with the small seeds, such as those for lettuce, we must be careful that they don't get too much water. Everything else thrives excellently in the small pots and will be then transplanted and sold. Transplanting multiple times is time-consuming but helps the plants grow. Since the small pots naturally heat up a lot in the high outside temperature (30°), it is necessary to transplant them into larger one or 2 kilo pots as quickly as possible. We then transplant tomatoes and other tree plants into pots between 10 and...
